Influential Stories about me # 5 (a change towards my destiny...)

The Legacy of Family Dreams: My Journey to Becoming a Doctor
                                                                                      -ANKITHA SHAJI

In the intricate tapestry of life, certain threads stand out, weaving the story of who we are and how we got here. One such thread that is essential to understanding me is the enduring wish of my grandfather for me to become a doctor. This wish, born out of a profound personal tragedy and fueled by love, has shaped my path in profound ways. From my earliest memories, my grandfather's dream for me was crystal clear: he wanted me to become a doctor. This aspiration was not a mere career choice; it was a heartfelt desire rooted in a deeply painful experience. My grandfather said the hospitals had been unable to diagnose my grandmother's illness, which ultimately led to her untimely death. This devastating loss left an indelible mark on him, a wound that never fully healed. He hoped that I would choose the path of medicine, not just as a career but as a way to heal others in ways he couldn't for my grandmother.

Life is a complex journey, often marked by unexpected twists. Another significant chapter unfolded during my kindergarten years when my father, a dedicated member of the US Army who had served in Kuwait between 2004 and 2011, faced an abrupt and unforeseen crisis. He served to the U.S. Arcent G1 in the area of information systems and technology support as a tech support to the Automated Data Processing Equipment (ADPE) and maximized equipment availability under Colonel Sheila B. Hickman. His job loss, attributed to security reasons, shook the very foundations of our family's stability.

My grandfather, who had toiled tirelessly in the unforgiving Kuwait oil fields to secure funds for my future studies, was determined to provide me with the opportunity to pursue my dreams. He believed in my potential and was willing to sacrifice his own comfort to ensure my success. However, fate can be cruel, and when I turned 11, my beloved grandfather, my guiding light, passed away. It was a moment that shook the very core of my being. The loss of my grandfather was a profound tragedy that left an indelible mark on my soul. I couldn't let his sacrifices go in vain, and I couldn't bear the thought of disappointing the man who had given so much for my future. Despite the overwhelming grief that enveloped my family, I found inspiration in my grandfather's dream. It became more than just a wish; it became a beacon of hope, a purpose that gave me strength and determination. I realized that my path to becoming a doctor was not just a career choice; it was a tribute to the love and belief my grandfather had in me. It was a way to honor his memory and fulfill the dream he had held so dearly.

Life continued to throw challenges our way. Financial stability became elusive, and my mother, recognizing the need to provide for the family, started offering private tuitions. Initially focused on students from class 6 to 8, she extended her sessions to include students up to class 10. I eagerly joined her in this endeavor, turning our home into a place of learning. These tuition sessions gradually became the primary source of income for our family, even though they were not enough for a comfortable life. Amidst these financial hardships, I learned the value of sacrifice and perseverance. I chose to forego the materialistic pleasures that often tempt children, understanding that every penny saved could contribute to a better future for my family. My determination to excel academically grew stronger, fueled by the knowledge that my family's hopes and dreams rested on my shoulders. Throughout my high school years, I continued to strive for excellence. My dedication and hard work paid off as I consistently achieved outstanding academic results. The dream of studying in a prestigious university, specifically in The US became my guiding star, a goal that would not only honor my grandfather's memory but also provide a better life for my family.

In conclusion, the wish of my grandfather for me to become a doctor is a foundational aspect of who I am today. It is a dream that emerged from personal tragedy, family sacrifice, and unwavering love. This dream has not only guided my choices and aspirations but has also shaped my identity. My journey is a testament to the enduring legacy of family dreams, a testament to the power of love and determination in the face of adversity.

Process of learning into an active and immersive experience
-ANKITHA SHAJI

An essential aspect of understanding me is my innate preference for delving deeper into concepts rather than simply memorizing theories. This approach to learning and understanding the world around me is a defining characteristic that influences my perspectives, choices, and interactions. I believe that true comprehension emerges from a profound exploration of underlying principles and the connections between different pieces of information. Rather than passively absorbing information at surface level, I am driven to uncover the "why" and "how" behind concepts. This involves critically questioning assumptions, seeking out diverse viewpoints, and actively engaging with the material.

By delving deeper into concepts, I aim to achieve a more holistic and nuanced understanding. I used to be a really diligent and academically successful until I realized my grave mistake I had committed throughout life when I turned 11. I used to mug up all concepts and blindly omit my views in the answer sheets. But then I got to know the importance of what I am learning while relating academics with my daily life. This approach allows me to grasp not only the theoretical foundations but also the real-world applications and implications of what I am learning. Furthermore, this preference for conceptual exploration fosters a sense of intellectual independence. Instead of relying solely on rote memorization, I am motivated to cultivate analytical thinking skills and engage in meaningful discussions. I seek to connect new information to existing knowledge, allowing me to build a robust mental framework that supports deeper insights and creative problem-solving.

In practical terms, this trait shapes my learning style and study habits. I am more likely to engage in discussions, seek out additional resources, and apply concepts to real-world scenarios which also help me become a part of friend circles and interact with my teammates. This approach may take more time and effort than memorization, but I find it to be a rewarding and enriching way to internalize knowledge. In relationships and collaborations, my inclination to dig deeper into concepts contributes to my communication style, which indeed also helped me analyze issues present in my personal matters. I have become a potential component of my family while making important decisions during gatherings.  I value discussions that encourage exploration and critical thinking, and I appreciate connecting with individuals who share this passion for intellectual depth.

Ultimately, my interest in digging deeper into concepts is an integral part of understanding me. It is a lens through which I view the world, guiding my learning journey, shaping my perspectives, and driving me to seek a deeper understanding of the complex tapestry of ideas that define our existence.

A Tale of Personal Growth Guided by My Late Grandfather

-
Ankitha Shaji

The transition from childhood to adulthood is often guided by significant events and cherished relationships within the family. In my case, a heartfelt accomplishment that marked this impactful shift was acknowledging my coming of age, with my late maternal grandfather playing a central and deeply meaningful role in shaping my personal thoughts to obedient etiquettes. Though I live with my parents since young, the mental connection between me and my grandfather can never be explained by putting words together. Though he is no more and blessed to stay with Almighty, before my adolescence, his influence on me can never be diminished nor destroyed. His gentle guidance, kindness, and unwavering support have been a cornerstone of my journey into adulthood, shaping my values, character, and perspective.

In our family, the transition from childhood to adulthood is marked by a traditional rite of passage ceremony. Ceremony, in the sense, a time around the age of thirteen when children who face transitions are given advice on what one might face in adulthood. Throughout my upbringing since the age of four, he exemplified the qualities of kindness, humility, and empathy, serving as a model of how to navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience. His stories, anecdotes, and words of wisdom served as a guiding light, shaping my moral compass and instilling in me a deep sense of respect for others. He used to give me gentle rebukes whenever I failed to follow his instructions but would instantly cheer me up and make me realize my mistakes.

A few years ago, I faced a daunting decision that had far-reaching implications for my education and future career. That unfortunate moment when a teenager has to take an important career for future endeavors. I was torn between pursuing a traditional path that seemed secure but didn't align with my passions and venturing into a field I was passionate about, even though it carried more uncertainties. I wanted to do something for the benefit of humanity and other lives. My grandfather’s stories had always inspired me to think that way. The weight of this decision felt overwhelming, and I found myself seeking solace in the memory of my grandfather, a man I deeply admired for his wisdom and kindness by choosing a future career for my future which was nothing, but to be an ideal and noble medical professional.

During a cherished conversation with my grandfather before he passed away, he shared a piece of advice that would later prove invaluable. He told me, "Follow your heart, my dear. Life is too short to live with regrets. Find the path that makes your soul sing, and you will find your way to success.” His words resonated deeply with me and served as a beacon of clarity during the torturing decision-making process. They provided the strength I needed to step away from the conventional path and embrace the journey that aligned with my true passions. My deep desire is to pursue my masters on clinical dermatology, but my bachelor's degree will surely help me save lives. Now, I have been consistently working harder day and night to accomplish my goal, which was not only my beloved grandfather’s wish before death, but also my inspiration to serve humanity through a noble profession.

My Intrinsic Passion

-Ankitha Shaji

From a very young age, I was drawn to the world of colors, lines, and textures. My earliest memories are splashed with the joy of finger painting in kindergarten. The first stationary I owned was a 6 colored paint palette. I never noticed the enchantment of my imagination skills taking into its form in my later life, until when I began to rely on art: my stress-reliever to pain. During my adolescence, art has had a significant impact on me. A time I encountered many personal challenges.

Navigating through the pathway of family upheaval and academic pressures, I discovered art as my source of emotional power that gave me a sense of joy. Through the fusion work of my graphite pencils, brushstrokes and pastels, I had found a language through which I could communicate the complexities of my thoughts and feelings. I never used to be a keen painter until the age of 12, when I began being inspired by Raja Ravi Varma sir's paintings. Though initially I tried mastering mural paintings, I later understood it wasn’t my cup of tea at all.

I firmly believe that my visit to US to my uncle's place in the same year, changed my perspective towards art drastically. My aunt was trying to find art pieces for their new house. Though, initially my mother mentioned about my artistic talent to her, I wasn’t confident to work on a canvas. A stroke of fear emerged through my chest when I was handed a fresh canvas of 120x150cm. I wouldn’t like to consider this as me boasting, but the nature-painting I made baffled my aunt, though I believed I didn't perfect the style. I can never miss out to mention the contribution of my aunt who helped me wake up the sleeping artist within my soul.

Then on, I tried pencil sketches on sheets of paper. I started off sketching my role models. I realized I could improve this talent through constant practice. Art had eventually become a passion for me. Even if art had influenced me, I never plan to major in Arts. My journey as an artist is an integral part of my identity and purpose that will continue, and I will preserve it through as many works as possible. I also feel, I could tackle the themes of gender inequality, mental health, and environmental sustainability, by aiming to spark conversations and evoke empathy among viewers. As I move forward, my commitment to using art as a catalyst for change will continue and shall remain persistent throughout.
